THE WHAT? The Estee Lauder Companies has announced that it is suspending all commercial activity in Russia, including closing every store it owns as well as its brand sites and shipments to retailers based in the country.

THE DETAILS The US prestige beauty firm’s latest move follows its US$1 million donation to relief efforts in Ukraine and the suspension of business investments and initiatives in Russia last week.

THE WHY? Western brands have come under increasing pressure to take action in the past week, with McDonalds hitting headlines for continuing to operate its restaurants in the country until bowing to pressure this week. The company said in a statement, “The Estee Lauder Companies continues to be devastated by the tragic invasion of Ukraine. We stand with all of those that are suffering, including our employees and their families and the people of Ukraine.”
