Hainan province ups duty free allowance for visitors

THE WHAT? China’s Hainan province has upped the duty free allowance for visitors as well as increasing the number of goods that qualify for the tax exemption.

THE DETAILS Visitors to Hainan will be able to make duty free purchases of up to CNY100,000 per year, a considerable rise on the prior CNY 30,000 limit.

Currently, shoppers can purchase goods from 38 categories, including perfume and cosmetics among others.

THE WHY? By 2025, the Chinese government is hoping to transform Hainan into an ‘international center for tourism and shopping’ – dubbed the Eastern Hawaii, its white sandy beaches are as much of a draw as the high-end boutiques.
