THE WHAT? The Founder of Uoma Beauty, Sharon Chuter has vowed to challenge the sale of her brand to MacArthur Beauty after the private equity firm announced the purchase of the black-owned brand’s intellectual property.
THE DETAILS According to a report published by the Business of Fashion, quoting an email from Chuter, the brand’s Founder learned of the sale for the first time only after it was a done deal. The private equity firm did not disclose financial details of the deal but Uoma Beauty’s sales are said to have totalled US$15 million in 2022.
THE WHY? Reports emerged over the summer that the brand had hit a stumbling block with orders unfulfilled and social media accounts falling silent. Todd Boren, Managing Partner at The MacArthur Companies told The Business of Fashion, “We saw an opportunity to save this company and turn it completely around.” Boren declined to comment on Chuter’s reported reaction to the sale, when contacted by The Business of Fashion.
